About Me
At present I am Visiting Professor in the Department of Theology and Religion at the University of Exeter, UK.
From 2004-2009 I was Professorial Research Fellow in Applied Theology at Exeter.
I am also Honorary Fellow in Medical Humanities at the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry in the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth (2007 on).
I currently teach three study units there on marriage and divorce; on religion and gender; and on extreme beliefs.
For 27 years (1977-2004) I taught at the College of St. Mark and St. John, Plymouth. For most of that time I was Head of Theology, and for 10 years the Professor of Applied Theology there. Before that I was a Baptist Minister (1966-74), and Lecturer at St. Paul's College, Cheltenham. I read Theology at Regent's Park College, in the University of Oxford (1962-66), and collected my D.Phil degree there in 1974.
My current academic interests are in the theologies of sex and gender, and marriage and family.
My last book, God, Sex and Gender – An Introduction, was an attempt to make the latest theological scholarship on sexuality and gender available to an undergraduate or equivalent audience. My next book, Making Sense of Sex, is published by SPCK in June 2012. It is part of the Making Sense series, which attempts to provide a liberal perspective on major Christian beliefs and practices. My current project, which will span the next four years, is to edit the Oxford Handbook of Theology, Sexuality and Gender.
I am a practising Christian, and feel especially at home in the Reformed Catholic Tradition. This is why I became an Anglican (Episcopalian) in 1988. I profess the classical Trinitarian faith of the Church, but I interpret this in a positive, progressive and liberal way.
I am available for theological consultancy, or to give lectures and seminars at conferences, research seminars, colloquia, training days, and the like.
I was married for 36 years, until my wife Grace died (in 2002) of myelodysplasia. I have a son, John, married to Valerie, and three wonderful grandchildren, James, Loren and William. I like to keep fit, mainly by running, swimming and coastal walking. I love classical music, modern jazz and bird-watching. I enjoy cooking, especially vegetarian. I attempt to play the piano, and I play for services at my local church.
